Cafe Madre
Madre is the neighborhood bakery from the team behind Scilla, one of Shanghai’s most sought-after Italian restaurants. The name means “mother” in Italian, and the space—with its blue-and-white palette, upstairs windows overlooking the leafy trees of Panyu Road, and a quiet courtyard view—was designed to feel like a warm, welcoming home.
Since opening, Madre has earned a reputation as one of Shanghai’s most authentic Italian bakeries, with queues forming before its 8:00 AM opening and many items selling out by noon. The bakery is part of a wave of Michelin-backed affordable concepts—Scilla is a Michelin-starred restaurant—bringing high-level pastry craft to everyday mornings.
The bakery has two floors: a ground-level counter for ordering and a cozy upstairs seating area with windows overlooking the garden courtyard. On sunny mornings, the outdoor window seats along the street offer the best perch for watching the neighborhood come alive.
